RX FOR EXPENSE REPORTS

Overwhelmed by shoe-boxes of sales receipts? Whether you’re a solo practitioner or the owner of a small business, keeping track of expenses is a grind that takes you away from your work at hand.

There are easy-to-use, reasonably-priced software packages specifically aimed at solving this function for small business. Here are a few:

  • Shoebox Records, SageFire, Inc.
    www.sagefire.com
Designed for the business owner, not the accounting professional, Shoebox Records lets you enter transactions, track automobile mileage, manage invoices, and generate reports. It also has features for reconciling.
Fee: $79.95 setup and registration charge; $9.95 for monthly subscription (first month free)
  • ThinMind Expense Reporting, ThinMind.com, a product and service of Shift Technologies, Inc.
    www.thinmind.com
This Web-based application promises a range of features for customizing expense types, and there are policy controls for catching errors before they are submitted.
Fee: No setup charges: $5 per user, per month
  • NeatReceipts, NeatReceipts, Inc.
    www.neatreceipts.com
This combination lightweight, portable scanner and software package lets business people scan receipts, invoices, and other financial documents to be saved in a searchable expense database. The software extracts all the important information from receipts—date, amount, vendor, etc.—and organizes it into a database, which can be searched and amended with comments for tax purposes. The software also automatically creates expense reports.
Fee: $229.95; $279.95 for the Enterprise version.
