Power Reference Checking
What's the most common mistake
companies make when checking a
prospective employee's references?
They don't check references at all or
they don't take the time to do careful
and complete research.
People also confuse reference
checking with the more typical background
check. "A background check
will tell you whether or not your candidate
is a liar, but it doesn't tell you
[anything] about how well that person
has done at their job, how they
get along with people, and what
they're best at," says Paul W. Barada,
president and founder of Barada
Associates Inc., a reference and background
check firm in Rushville, IN.
Here are a few recommendations:
- Make sure the candidate signs a
waiver saying it's okay to check
their references.
- Make it the candidate's job to find
the references you want to hear from.
- Avoid any kind of personal references
—they are a waste of time.
